Broadwaythe beating heart of the American theatre scene in New York, will be closed until June 2021. Local media report that this announcement will be made on Friday by the Broadway League, the theatres' umbrella organisation.
Broadway in New York
In principle, there will be no theatrical or musical performances in the city until 30 May. All stages had to close their doors in mid-March due to the corona epidemic. The damage to the cultural sector is estimated at billions of dollars. New York's theatres attracted 15 million visitors last year.
At the time of closing, more than thirty shows were running on Broadway, most of them to great acclaim. Eight shows were still in the test phase; these have never officially opened. In addition, rehearsals were underway for eight new shows that were due to open in mid-2020.
It is unclear how many of these performances will still be shown in 2021. The Tony Awards, America's top theatre awards, will soon be presented during a digital ceremony.
